Meet Katie!

“I’m thankful 1000 times over for this experience.  It is the ultimate gift you can give to anyone and an experience you’ll never forget!”

Q: What led you to become a Surrogate?

I had a friend that struggled with infertility a couple of years ago and in my mind, I had no hesitations that I would be willing to carry a baby for her.  She ended up getting pregnant, but that thought never left my mind.  If I could do it for a friend, no doubt I could do it for someone else, even someone I did not know.  There are so many people that struggle to get pregnant and people like me that have had easy pregnancies.  I think that it’s a blessing to be able to help others grow their families.

Q. Who was/is your greatest support person/s throughout your journey?

My husband was probably my biggest supporter.  When I brought the idea to him, his first words were, “If anyone can do it, you can!”  He had no hesitations at all and was such a help and encouragement throughout the whole process.

Q. What made you decide to choose your Intended Parents?

When we first met with our Intended Parents at our Match meeting, it didn’t take any time at all to realize that this was the family I wanted to carry for.  I could see the love and passion they had for their own family.  They were kind and down-to-earth.  We related with them on many levels and I felt that with them that the journey would be comfortable and would eventually turn into a sweet friendship.

Q. What are some of the highlights of your journey?

I had big ideas of what the journey would look like but in March of 2020, Covid halted any get-togethers we had initially planned.  We were able to meet for my 10-week appointment and spend the day together.  The biggest highlight was the birth.  Despite covid and all the restrictions, we were able to all gather in the hospital room and witness the very quick birth of that precious little boy.  There aren’t enough words to describe the feelings or emotions of watching that couple take that precious little boy they’ve longed for and hold him for the first time.  Still brings tears to my eyes to remember that moment.

Q. Do you have advice for women who are interested in becoming a gestational surrogate?

I think my biggest piece of advice would be to ask questions and be patient.  There are no dumb questions when it comes to surrogacy.  There are so many different steps, appointments, forms, etc.  If you are unsure about anything just reach out because this process isn’t just about you, you are traveling this journey with another family as well and you want to make sure things are done decently and in order to ensure the best outcome possible.

Also, be patient.  Again, there are A LOT of steps and some parts might seem that it should be a quick process but that’s not always the case.  Take a deep breath, occupy your mind with something positive and wait.  It’ll all work out at the perfect time!

Q. What did you find was the biggest misconception people had about surrogacy?

9 times out of 10 people would think that it would be hard to either give up the baby or be emotionally attached to the baby.  That couldn’t be farther from the truth.  You go into this process knowing that you are doing this for another family. Plus, the baby is 100% someone else’s DNA.   If anything, I think that I became closer (emotionally) with the parents.  It’s just such an overwhelming joy to carry a child for such deserving people.

Q. How has becoming a surrogate impacted your life?

Surrogacy has impacted my life in the best way possible.  It has given me an even bigger appreciation for my own children and the fact that I was able to carry them easily.  It’s given me a bigger heart for those that struggle with infertility.  I didn’t realize what all goes into traveling the infertility road until I became a surrogate.  When I hear the term “Warrior” in reference to a lady that has gone through infertility, I now know what they mean.

I’m thankful 1000 times over for this experience.  It is the ultimate gift you can give to anyone and an experience you’ll never forget!

I could say 100 good things about FSC.  Family Source is so incredibly professional and competent.  They worked so fast, were always quick to respond, and handled literally everything!  I never had to worry about what the next step was or how to handle that step.  I also really appreciated that they had a Surrogate support group.  So many girls have already traveled the road of surrogacy and were helpful in answering questions that I had along the journey.  All in all, I give them a 12 out of 10!
