What is a gestational surrogate? Is it different than a gestational carrier?

The terms gestational surrogate and gestational carrier are interchangeable and refer to a woman who carries a child that is conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and is not biologically related to her. The child may be conceived using the egg of the intended parent or an egg donor, and the sperm of the intended parent or sperm donor.

What is a “traditional” surrogate?

A traditional surrogate is one who carries a child using her own egg and is the genetic and biological mother of the child. With traditional surrogacy, pregnancy is often achieved using artificial insemination, though in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used, depending on the circumstances.
